Deathless Flame

For we wrestle not against flesh and blood but against principalities, against power, against the rulers of the darkness of the world, against spiritual wickedness in high places”

I’m fascinated by darkness. It’s not just the dark side of human nature that ensnares me but physical darkness as well. I love nighttime. How delectable it is to relax with only a scented candle proving light and sounds of nature in the background. No, I’m not a vampire and though I enjoy a good vampire story, I don’t write them.  In my stories, which always contain the supernatural, darkness is both something to fear and something to draw power from.

Two gorgeous poems, Lord George Gordon Bryon’s Darkness  and St. John of the Cross’ Dark Night aka Dark Night of the Soul both embody what my stories are about. I just read  Stevenson’s “Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.”  I’m still reeling. It’s an amazing story, not at all what I expected. I read Conrad’s “Heart of Darkness” years ago and plan on rereading it next.  I love how each work gives me insight into my own stories.

I’ve started reading books about Carl Jung’s shadow. I don’t claim to be an expert on the human psyche but I’m intrigued by the shadow and curious how learning more about it will help my stories. I will, of course, post some of my thoughts on what I’ve learned. Comment, I insist. I welcome feedback and any tips about moving further.

Peace
